Abstract

In 1978 it was observed that a periodic index change can be induced in a germania doped silica optical fiber by counterpropagating argon-ion laser beams.1 Several applications have been proposed for these gratings including their use as temperature or strain sensors,1 2 For the first time, we believe, we demonstrate their extreme sensitivity to vibrations.
