Abstract

Mechanical fiber optic switches are expensive and have limited operational life-times. We describe a nonmechanical 2×2 optical switch using chiral-nematic liquid crystals (CLCs) suitable for multimode or single-mode optical fibers. Previous LC switches required expensive polarizing optics to obtain good performance.1
