Optical logic using electrically connected quantum well PIN diode modulators and detectors

Abstract

We present two classes of novel self-electrooptic effect devices1 consisting of electrically connected quantum well PIN diodes capable of implementing any Boolean logic function. One class of devices has single ended (nondifferential) optical inputs, and the connections of diodes in these devices (circuits) resemble the transistor connections in the NMOS logic family. The other class of circuits has differential optical inputs and outputs, and the connections of diodes in these devices (circuits) resemble the transistor connections of the CMOS logic family. Like the symmetric SEED (S-SEED),2 both classes of devices avoid critical biasing, have time-sequential gain, have good input/output isolation, provide signal retiming, and can be operated over several decades in power level. Thus the devices should be easy to use for future optical computing experiments.
