Abstract

The theory of electromagnetic wave amplification based on the stimulated Compton effect was developed in Refs. 1 and 2. If an amplifying wavebeam of relativistic electrons, and pumping wave propagate in opposite directions, owing to the Doppler effect, the frequency shift of the amplifying field relative to the pumping wave frequency increases strongly, and it can be tuned changing the mean energy of the beam of electrons. The possibility of obtaining generation in the UV and. x-ray wavelength range appears. Weak Compton amplification can be somewhat increased if a beam of electrons is at an angle.3
