Abstract
Two-dimensional arrays of grating-surface-emitting (GSE) lasers in ring configurations have recently been demonstrated (see Fig. I).1 Experimental studies of these devices have identified two distinct modes of operation: (1) A pure ring mode where laser oscillation occurs because of feedback almost exclusively from the corner turning mirrors and the distributed Bragg reflector sections simply act as output coupler sections. This is referred to as a Fabry-Perot ring mode.
