Abstract
This paper reports the first semiconductor laser package utilizing an uptapered single-mode fiber.1,2 The package addresses a critical problem limiting the implementation of optical fiber in subscriber loops: the availability of economical reliable broadband lasers. Most of the cost of a single-mode fiber coupled laser arises from the packaging, not from the laser. This paper describes the high yield, stability, high coupling efficiency, and quick assembly offered by the reduced lateral sensitivity of an uptapered fiber package. It further describes we believe for the first time, how the increased angular sensitivity can be accommodated by the mechanical design of the package.
