Abstract

Traveling-wave semiconductor laser amplifiers have recently been used in optical communication systems as optical repeaters and optical booster amplifiers.1-2 The impact of intensity noise from the amplifier from spontaneous emission has been extensively analyzed; however, the phase noise from semiconductor laser amplifiers has not been studied so far. We experimentally show that the phase noise is actually generated in the semiconductor laser amplifier and that it stems from the refractive index variation caused by the carrier density fluctuation induced by the stochastic nature of the carrier recombination processes.
