Fabrication and analysis of binary Fresnel lenses as a practical means of generating two-dimensional source arrays for optical interconnections

Abstract

Availability of 2-D coherent source arrays is essential for optical interconnection architectures. One such architecture that we are currently investigating is the photorefractive interconnect system with coherently erasable synapses (PISCES) in which arrays of courses and detectors are interconnected with variable weights1 (see Fig. 1). In this configuration, N X N arrays of coherent beams that impinge on a photorefractive crystal through spatial light modulators (SLMs) are generated by fanning out a beam from an Ar laser.
