Abstract
The charge correlation mechanisms responsible for large second-order nonlinear optical susceptibilities in organic molecules are fairly well understood. This knowledge has led to the discovery of molecules possessing large susceptibilities through molecular engineering concepts. It has become possible to take advantage of these large molecular susceptibilities in high quality waveguide structures by incorporating these molecules into optical quality amorphous polymers and subsequent electric field poling.
