Quasi-cw diode-array side pumped 946-nm neodymium laser

Abstract

We report here the demonstration of a side pumped Nd:YAG solid state laser operating at 946 nm with an electrical efficiency exceeding 4%. The cylindrical laser rod was transversely pumped using a 1-cm long by 5-bar GaAlAs array. This geometry is easily scalable to pump energies of several joules and when frequency doubled could provide an efficient source of blue-green light.
