Backscattering coherent effects in laser remote sensing

Abstract

A detailed analysis of backscattering coherent effects in laser remote sensing is developed to explain the well known anomalous experimental results of lidar ocean remote sensing experiments1–3 that are inconsistent with simplistic lidar equation models. It is shown that correct treatment4 of backscattering coherent effects from a random surface (atmosphere-ocean interface) explains the experimental results and predicts, for some special cases, order of magnitude deformations and some other new features of the lidar echo-signal pulse shape.
