Abstract
The optical properties of a tissue are what determine the distribution of light within the tissue and the observable reflection. Knowledge of the optical properties of neonatal skin is important in determining radiative transport in this multilayered tissue. Therapeutic applications of light include phototherapy of bilirubinemia and laser treatment of vascular lesions. Diagnostic applications include oximetry and hyperbilirubinemia assessment. Here we report on the optical properties determined for neonatal skin and how they affect the penetration of light into skin.
