Abstract

Optical amplifiers are currently being considered as a key element of fiber optic communications systems. These amplifiers are typically based on laser diode or fiber laser gain elements. Such devices supply gains between 15 and 35 dB. However, due to the small area of their active regions, they are limited in their overall output powers to ~10 mW. In certain situations higher output power levels may be desirable (i.e., cable TV distribution systems where large numbers of subscribers are supplied with the same signal). We have developed a diode pumped cw optical amplifier which provides both high gain and high output powers at 1047 nm. We demonstrate that this device in conjunction with an integrated optic modulator provides a wide bandwidth source (1 GHz) with diffraction-limited output powers of several watts.
