Abstract

KNbO3 has electrooptic and nonlinear optical properties superior to, e.g., LiNbO3, which makes it a prime candidate for guided wave nonlinear optical and electrooptical applications.1-2 The first waveguides in KNbO3 were created by Baumert et al.3 Recently it has been shown that 2-MeV He+ ion bombardment leads to the formation of leaky waveguides which consist of thin nearly undamaged layers of crystalline KNbO3 at the surface, which are separated from the bulk by a barrier layer of partially amorphized KNbO3 with lowered refractive index.
