Electrical switching in superconducting YBCO thin films using picosecond optical pulses

Abstract

Thin films of the new high temperature ceramic superconductors, are being investigated as optically activated opening electronic switches because of the high resistivity these materials have in the normal state. One-micron thick films of YBa2-Cu3O7(YBCO) were deposited on insulating substrates (MgO and ZrO2) and patterned with a scanned laser beam to produce a superconducting opening switch. The switch went from the superconducting state to the normal state when illuminated with 100-ps light pulses from a YAG laser.
