Abstract

Two-color laser ranging is an attractive technique for determining the range correction due to atmospheric refraction by means of two-color propagation delay measurements. With this method, one expects to verify and possibly upgrade the existing atmospheric refraction models to the subcentimeter accuracy level and thus provide (1) ground to ground measurements up to 200 km on a 1-cm level, (2) ground to satellite ranging with an accuracy of 5 mm, and (3) satellite to ground ranging. To achieve these goals, the two-color propagation time delay has to be determined within picoseconds.1-2 Assuming available high power picosecond lasers and existing detectors, the solution becomes Nd crystals and a streak camera equipped with a S-20 photocathode.
