Abstract

The University of Rochester has constructed and operated a single shot, short pulse (0.1–1.1-ns) Nd:giass laser for the past four years for materials testing and nonlinear optics experiments. Recently, we were awarded a National Science Foundation grant to upgrade this source to a 3-J multiwavelength source with a 1–2-Hz repetition rate. The repetition rate is determined by data acquisition capabilities. The front end of the system consists of a 3-m active–passive mode-locked Nd:glass oscillator capable of operating at 0.1–1.1 ns. A single 1-mJ pulse is amplified by a ¼- × 6-in. Nd:glass rod that is capable of delivering up to 100 mJ of drive.
