Three-micron laser performance of Nd, Ho: YAIO3

Abstract

The potential medical application of 3-μm lasers has spurred a search for an efficient, high power, solid state source.1 Holmium laser operation at 2.9 μm has been demonstrated in many host crystals using the 5I65I7 transition.2 Unfortunately, the self-terminating behavior of these lasers makes them inappropriate for high power operation. Following up on a suggestion by Kaminskii, Machan et al.3 explored codoping Ho: YAG with neodymium in an attempt to remove the self-terminating laser behavior.3 We have pursued this idea further using the anisotropic laser host material YAIO3.
