Abstract

A narrowband blue-green (455 nm) solid state Ti: sapphire source has been demonstrated at the ~1-mJ level. The source is tunable and has been used to excite Cs atoms in a simple Cs filter arrangement. The fluorescence decay of Cs in the NIR was then observed as the narrowband source is tuned through the Cs resonance. These measurements verify the narrow bandwidth and vividly demonstrate the applicability of Ti: sapphire solid state laser technology for blue-green applications. Furthermore, because the source is widely tunable a large fraction of the ocean water transmission bandwidth can be accessed.
