Abstract

Two-beam coupling is an important technique for investigating the photorefractive properties of barium titanate (BaTiO3 crystals. Recently, evidence of nonlinear absorption in barium titanate has been reported.1,2 We report the effects of nonlinear absorption on measurements of effective two-beam coupling gain as a function of the ratio of the intensities of the two writing beams. Our experimental results cannot be described by two-beam coupling theories which do not include nonlinear absorption. We derive beam coupling equations which include index gratings, absorption gratings, and nonlinear absorption. Solutions of these beam coupling equations agree with our experimental results. The nonlinear absorption terms must be taken into account when using two- beam coupling measurements to determine material parameters of BaTiO3.
