A 1-ms electron-beam pumped laser kinetics experiment

Abstract

The 1-ms electron-beam pumped laser kinetics experiment shown in Fig. 1 has been developed to investigate e-beam pumped lasers at pulse widths between 0.03 and 1.0 ms and pump rates between 0.1 and 1.0 kW/cm3. A modified electrostatic accelerator1 is used to generate a 1-MeV electron beam with a current continuously variable from 0.1 to 1.5 A and pulse widths variable from 0.03 to 1.0 ms. This e-beam passes through three fast-acting valves that separate the 10−8-Torr accelerator vacuum from a 2-m long isolation section, a 0.5-m long gas buffer section, and the laser cell. The isolation section, between the first two valves, prevents gas from the buffer region from reaching the first valve during the time it is open. The buffer section, containing noble gas at the same pressure as the laser gas, prevents significant loss of laser gas while the valves are open. A 6.5-kG axial magnetic field in the gas-filled regions confines the electron-beam against scattering from the gas and also guides the beam around the comer into the laser cell.
