Abstract

Recently we reported the observation of stimulated emission in art optically excited copper vapor.1 It was found that collisional mixing of the two upper levels plays art important role in the stimulated emission and that the optically pumped copper vapor laser shows a number of other interesting behaviors. We also measured the optical gains of the two laser transitions (green and yellow lasers) by means of optical pumping. This measurement is important because, unlike the usual pumping by electrical discharge, optical pumping can selectively excite only one level at a time. We present the results of the gain measurements and discuss its implications for high pressure copper vapor lasers (CVLs).
