Relaxation processes in resonant energy transfer

Abstract

Relaxation processes play the dominant role in radiationless resonant energy transfer (RET) in solids. Density matrix analysis of RET between two impurity ions has proved to be fruitful1 when decay and phase relaxation times were introduced phenomenologically into the density matrix equations. However, the known density matrix theories of RET do not account for the possible correlation of relaxation in the ions as well as the dependence of phase relaxation times on the value of ion-ion Coulomb interaction.
