Temporally smooth broadband pulses obtained by cross phase modulation in an optical fiber

Abstract

Future plans for spatially smoothing the focal spot of Nova laser beams employ various induced spatial incoherence (ISI)1 and random phase plate2 schemes, for ISI to achieve the desired goal, a spectral bandwidth of 20–50 Å is required on the propagated puises (1–5 ns). In addition, temporal smoothness of the pulse is desirable, since high-peak-to-average intensities increase the tendency of the beam to spatially self-focus, which can cause catastrophic damage to Nova's large optical components.
