Pulse shaping on the Nova laser system

Abstract

Nova has been shaping input pulses to produce nominally flat temporal pulses on a routine basis since the activation of the laser system in 1984. As Nova's capabilities have icreased, requirements for more complex pulse shapes have become important, specifically pulses tailored to produce high compression in inertial confinement fusion (ICF) experiments. Pulse shapes of interest for Nova experiments include (1) ~3-ns tailored pulses with a specified intensity range of up to 20× and (2) picket fence pulses consisting of a 1-ns square pulse at high power, preceded by two to three Gaussian pulses of 0.1–0.3-ns duration separated by specified time intervals. Recently, we demonstrated Nova's ability to produce these complex pulses at powers up to 4 TW/beamline at 0.35 μm.
