Intensity-induced absorption in BaTIO3 using pulsed laser excitation

Abstract

In recent years, several observations of intensity-induced absorption in BaTiO3 have been reported.1,2 In each case, the experiments were performed with cw lasers, and the net change in absorption coefficient was small. We have observed much larger increases in the absorption coefficient of BaTiO3 using high power pulsed excitation at 532 nm. We used this intensity-induced absorption to demonstrate limiting action. In addition, we performed a number of diagnostic experiments to understand the characteristics and origins of the absorption change in the pulsed regime.
