Abstract

Recently, the self-referencing of fiber sensors has become an important issue as they become more widely used in industrial applications. Numerous techniques for this have been employed, such as bypass fibers, wavelength multiplexing, and source Intensity monitoring. We describe the periodic microbend response of two-mode fibers operated in a self-referencing manner. We exploit the difference in confinement between the two modes: the weakly bound LP11 mode may be readily attenuated by the microbend, whereas the tightly bound LP01 mode will suffer little or no loss.
