Automated planar-velocity measurement in a jet diffusion flame

Abstract

An automated planar-velocity system has been developed for making measurements on a cold air jet. The system consists of a cw argon-ion laser modulated by a rotating mirror, a CCD camera system for recording the coded particle tracks, and the software necessary to identify the particles, decode the pattern, and determine a velocity vector. The unique feature of the scheme is the ease with which separation between successive illumination pulses can be changed to accommodate vastly different velocity scales.
