Abstract
Laser diode pump sources for solid state lasers are an efficient and long lived alternative to more conventional flashlamps. However, for laser outputs much in excess of a few watts, it is necessary to use a transverse pumping geometry that will allow scaling to larger active volumes. The overlap of the pump and absorption spectra is a critical parameter for efficient absorption and optimizing the overlap between the gain distribution and laser cavity modes for good extraction.
