Origin of the sublinear intensity dependence in photorefractive materials

Abstract

In recent years, several nonlinear optical experiments performed on barium titanate have shown that the response time of such material can acquire an l−xdependence.1 The exponential factor x ranges from 1.0 to 0.6; the nature of such whimsical behavior is unknown at the present time. Although photorefractive materials are being employed in optical devices, little is understood concerning the physical mechanisms and role of defects beyond what can be deduced from a multiple variable fit of the charge transport equation to the experimental data.
