Abstract

Potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP) harmonic conversion crystals normally have surface irregularities, particularly if a diamond turning process was used to produce the optical surface rather than more conventional polishing. These irregularities, especially the diamond turning lines, can cause laser beam distortion. In some cases, this wavefront distortion can cause laser damage on components further down the system due to beam self-focusing.
