Efficiency optimization for a flashlamp pumped room temperature 2-µm laser

Abstract

We report the results of experimental investigations undertaken to optimize the overall efficiency of a flashlamp pumped room temperature 2-µm laser. Lasers operating on the 5/75/8 transition of the Ho3+ ion in several garnet hosts were studied. Sensitization for flashlamp pumping was provided by Cr3+ and Tm3+ codopants via the pumping process shown schematically in Fig. 1.
