Abstract

There is considerable interest in the development of new materials for nonlinear optical and electrooptical applications. Of the few materials that have been developed recently, KTiOPO4 (KTP) has many unique properties, especially for frequency doubling Nd:YAG lasers as well as for use in various electrooptic and integrated optic applications.1–4 KTP is just one member of the family of materials with the formula MTiOXO4, where M is K, Rb, Tl, NH4, and Cs (partial) and X is P or As. Although development has concentrated on KTP, the original research leading to the discovery of the nonlinear optical properties of this material showed that the other family members also have large second-order optical nonlinearities. We have grown large single crystals of KTiOAsO4 (KTA) and measured its linear optic, nonlinear optic, electrooptic, and dielectric properties.
