Second harmonic generation of blue light in periodically poled lithium niobate

Abstract

Compact sources of coherent blue radiation are under development for optical storage and other uses. Since the near-term prospects appear poor for semiconductor diode lasers emitting in the blue, attention has been focused on low power nonlinear frequency conversion techniques to attain these wavelengths. The simplest such technique is to directly frequency double the output of a GaAIAs diode laser. Materials with high nonlinearity, good optical quality, and the ability to phase match the range of wavelengths available from this type of diode laser are, therefore, in demand.
