Abstract

Full characterization of the acoustic and acoustooptic properties of an organic crystal, POM, has been performed, we believe, for the first time. POM1 is a highly anisotropic and highly birefringent orthorhombic crystal composed of 3-methyl-4-nitropyridine-1-oxide molecules whose transparency range extends from 0.51 to 1.7 μm. The tailoring of POM is currently leading to the demonstration of remarkable quadratic optically nonlinear properties.2
