Correctability of thermal blooming in a thick continuous medium

Abstract

The limit of thermal blooming correctability has been studied previously using a geometric optics approach and Gaussian beam propagation. In the geometric optics approach,1 a point source at the target plane is used to sense the diverging power of the thermal blooming medium. The phase curvature of the high power beam is adjusted accordingly to compensate for the effect. Since this is a phase-only correction scheme and the finite beam size effect is not considered, it is hardly a satisfactory model for the system. The Gaussian beam propagation method was used to account for the effect of finite beam sizes and complete field conjugation for the laser beam.2
