Abstract

Intersatellite laser communication requires of the order of 1-W TEM00. Huff1 has reported a 2-W TEM00 directly solar pumped Nd:Cr:YAG laser. He used a 24-in. diam collecting aperture and achieved a conversion efficiency of 1 %. In his experiment a solar image is formed by a Cassegrainian telescope. The image is reconcentrated into the end of the laser rod by a lens/hollow cone nonimaging element. An irradiance at the cone exit (front end of rod) of 1.5 kW cm−2 was measured.
