Abstract

Recent publications have shown that the technique of comparing experimental probability density functions with theory by comparing moments of the distributions is subject to various errors. Consortini and Hill1 have pointed out that if the empirical data are distorted by the effects of amplifier saturation, the higher moments can be substantially reduced, especially in the case of distributions with a long tail, e.g., the lognormal and the recently proposed lognormally modulated exponential.2
