Tunable narrow bandpass optical filters and their applications

Abstract

The atomic resonance filter1 (ARF) is a very narrow linewidth optical filter, which is insensitive to environmental conditions and has a very large field of view. Nearly degenerate four-wave mixing (NDFWM) has been recognized for its capability of providing a narrow optical bandpass filter.2 NDFWM in resonantly enhanced media for the narrow bandwidth of the fraction of 10−8 (~25 MHz) has been demonstrated3 in atomic sodium vapor. It is also well known that four-wave mixing is effective for a nearly 180° field of view.
