Nonlinear optical spectra from liquid droplets

Abstract

In two-phase flows or in an aerosol ladened atmosphere, it is often desirable to determine the chemical and physical properties of microparticles by in situ and nearly real time optical means. The sample-air interface of microparticles can enhance the internal laser intensity as well as provide optical feedback for the internally generated waves such as lasing, stimulated Raman scattering (SRS), and stimulated Britain scattering (SBS). The combination of enhanced internal fields and optical feedback greatly lowers the input intensity thresholds for nonlinear optical processes.
