Abstract

For laser plasma research at the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics, Garching, F.R.G., the single-beam Asterix IV high power iodine laser was constructed based on experience with 1-TW Asterix III (Fig. 1). Development has been supported by the 3-D pulse propagation code ISTERN.1 The Asterix IV concept2 offers flexibility In pulse duration between 0.1 and 3 ns and maximum pulse energies of 1-2 kJ. The amplifier chain consisting of a preamplifier and five consecutive amplifiers of increasing diameters and lengths can be driven by a pulse delivered either by a mode-locked or long pulse oscillator.
