Advances in Ti:sapphire lasers

Abstract

The Ti3+:Al2O3 (Ti:sapphire) laser is a tunable solid state laser operating to date over the 660-1178-nm wavelength region. The laser transition is between the 2E and 2T2 states of the Ti3+ single d electron; a strong interaction between the host-crystal lattice and the electronic states results in the large laser gain linewidth. The trigonal crystal field at the Ti3+ site induces a comparatively high oscillator strength for the laser transition, leading to a peak gain cross section of 3.5 × 10−19 cm2 and an upper state lifetime of 3.2 μs.
