Abstract

Continuous-wave Ti:Al2O3 lasers are beginning to compete with near IR dye lasers. Application areas include optical pumping of rare-earth lasers (including fiber lasers), diode-laser simulation, optoelectronic device development, and spectroscopy. The first demonstration1 of efficient cw room-temperature operation set the stage for rapid development of these lasers. Recently, a single frequency ring laser was demonstrated.2 In both cases, large frame argon-ion lasers were employed as pump sources. Here we report on development of low threshold room-temperature Ti:Al2O3 lasers capable of equivalent performance with significantly lower input power requirements.
