Abstract

Nonlinear optical properties of quantum wells (QWs) and superlattices (SLs) have recently become the objects of intense study.1 Quantum confinement of carriers leads to the existence of strong resonances in the absorption spectra attributed to both conduction-to-valence band2 and intersubband3 transitions. That in turn leads to large optical nonlinearities. Third-order nonlinearity in symmetrical QWs and SLs has been studied by numerous authors.1-4 We report the results of calculations of second-order nonlinear properties based on interband and intersubband processes in various asymmetric QW structures.
