Abstract
We consider a one-electron atom exhibiting above-threshold ionization (ATI) during intense laser excitation and focus on the contribution of above-threshold states to its wave function. Two regimes of ionization are particularly interesting: (1) The ground state population is depleted but is still much greater than the population of any single ATI band of above-threshold states. (2) The ground state is pratically empty of population Here we concentrate on regime (1) and develop a simplified analysis of the wave function. In contrast to previous theoretical work we use only one basic assumption, that the ionization process is slow on the time scale of an optical cycle.
