Abstract

Laser phase-induced Intensity noise (PIIN) has held interest for several years due to the importance of its power spectrum in estimating laser linewidths via delayed self-heterodyne and self-homodyne techniques.1 More recently, interest in PIIN has been renewed by observations that, as a parasitic effect in multipath fiber-optic communication systems, it can generate significantly elevated error rate floors.2,3
