Coherent operation of AIGaAs laser arrays with high Strehl ratio using coupled microcavities and binary optical elements

Abstract

Coherent beam addition of 2-D laser diode arrays can produce extremely bright sources. One promising technique is to employ an external cavity consisting of an array of binary optic micro-lenses and an output mirror. By correct spacing of the mirror, the feedback light distribution produces a self-image at the lenslet array, insuring efficient coupling of the feedback light into the laser waveguides.1 We have measured the thresholds of the in phase and out-of-phase lateral modes. of the external cavity as a function of mirror spacing. These results indicate that the out-of-phase mode is more stable. We have designed a miniature external cavity to lase in the out-of-phase mode and applied it to a 1-D laser array. The mode is converted into a single far field lobe by a binary phase correcting grating.
