Abstract

The advent of high quality, high power semiconductor laser diodes has rejuvenated the field of diode laser pumped solid state lasers.1 While exhibiting high efficiency and in some cases unprecedentedly narrow free-running linewidths, these systems are generally not tunable and do not operate in the visible. In previous work2 we addressed the latter problem by demonstrating highly efficient second harmonic generation of a single-mode Nd:YAG laser using an external resonant cavity of MgO:LiNbO3, The technique relied on using this low loss nonlinear crystal, a monolithic cavity design (i.e., dielectric mirrors deposited directly upon the crystal surface) such as used for the laser and the high degree of coherence in the laser pumped source. We report on operation of a cw pumped doubly resonant optical parametric oscillator (OPO) pumped by the second harmonic of a diode laser pumped solid state laser, again exploiting these techniques.
