Optical parametric oscillators pumped by excimer lasers

Abstract

The advent of new optically nonlinear materials of high UV damage threshold together with recent improvements in excimer laser design, particularly with regard to beam quality and linewidth, has opened opportunities for efficiently generating tunable coherent radiation throughout the near UV, visible, and near IR using optical parametric oscillators (OPOs). The particular advantages of excimer lasers as pumps for OPOs compared, for example, with frequency converted Nd:YAG lasers are the shorter pumping wavelengths available, which result in improved tuning ranges, the higher overall efficiencies, and the potential for much higher average powers.
