Abstract

Recently a tilted waveguide traveling wave amplifier (TWA) (Fig. 1) with a peak gain of 19 dB at λ ≃ 1.5 μm and 2-dB gain ripple was demonstrated.1 A controlled tilt angle of the waveguide axis with respect to the cleaved end mirrors can result in efficient reduction of the effective reflectivity of the oscillating mode. However, for certain waveguide parameters and tilt angle, the optical output field distribution is gain-dependent. These operating parameters should be avoided in the design of TWAs. Here we present a simple model to clarify these features, and the observed output of a tilted TWA is discussed in terms of this model.
